This Cognac comes from an auction held in January 2019 in aid of Médecins du Monde and Action contre la Faim. The cognacs had been donated to those two NGOs by André Bertandeau, a winegrower in Salignac-sur-Charente who passed away in December 2016. In 1942, aged 20, Bertandeau was deported by the STO to Germany, to the Buchenwald and Dora camps. He survived until the liberation in 1945. On returning to the family estate, he bore witness throughout his life. He donated the modest proceeds of his small property to charitable associations and, on his death, bequeathed all his possessions — estate, vineyards and stocks — to those NGOs. A rare Cognac from a small estate in La Brousse, a commune near Matha. The current producer, born in 1952, still keeps cognacs distilled by his father and grandfather. The estate did not have its first traditional 16-hectolitre Maresté still until 1950 — before that they distilled, like most of the holdings in the Charente, in a small pot of 500 to 600 litres. They used wood during the day for the brouillis and charcoal at night for the bonnes-chauffes. This Cognac was blended from two lots by the winegrower himself, with the guidance of a great Cognac house.
